DONN SABEAN: (pronounced: SAY-be-in) Artist | Designer: Textile Artist | Surface Design | Fashion Design NSCADU: BFA, Major in Textiles/Fashion (Arthur Lismer Award of Excellence) | ANSCAD, Graphic Design.
As a Surface Designer, I begin by hand-dying and hand-printing yards of silk, using a technique known as 'EcoPrinting' (or 'Leaf-printing'); a gentle, thoughtful, sustainable way of creating original textiles. Because this slow, by-hand process produces textiles in extremely limited amounts—and that each leaf may be used only once before it is exhausted of its natural dye pigments—every scarf, and every resulting yard/textile I produce, is unique.
As a Fashion Designer, I use these textiles in conjunction with silks from reclaimed vintage saris, to design, and make by hand, pieces with a low-waste/minimal-cut approach. I acquiesce to the aesthetics/characteristics of the cloth—whether designing with my own silks or with sari silks—allowing each to dictate the respective finished garment.
Due to the extremely limited quantity of each unique textile--whether my own or reclaimed--every piece coming out of my studio is one-of-a-kind.
WHERE DO I SELL?
Currently, I sell only out of my studio, by appointment, and at local shows and events. Because I work with my own textiles, and/or make only one-of-a-kind and custom pieces, a visit to my Halifax studio is often in order. To make an appointment, or to discuss custom pieces, please email: donn@donnsabean.ca
